two problems (recent)

its been getting cold here, and in the mornings its been taking 3 tries to start the car in the morning. battery is good, and the starter sounds fine. Could a dirty IAC make it harder to start in the cold?

Second, the center vent in the dash is stuck blowing the air "up" and not out of the lower 2 directional vents. Does anyone have any idea of how to put that together again? the shutter to direct airflow is defintely not on the switch anymore. I know i have to take the dash apart, i just dont want to take it apart to find out it is broken for good.

Your first problem may be contributed to an old cold start valve. I changed mine out last year and it made a world of difference.

oh okay ill look into that. also, last week i popped the car into neutral while the engine was still cold, and it immediately started revving to 3000 rpm. my foot was not on the gas. i put it back into drive and the drive idle was at 2000 rmp. a minute later it went back to its normal cold idle of 1500rpm in neutral

Since your starter is working fine, there are two main culprits to look at:

First, check your cold start injector and cold start injector time switch. Those two together spray extra fuel on cold start that allow the engine to start. Search other posts on here for details.

Second, your idle air controller may be sticky. Try a good throttle body cleaning, along with cleaning the idle air controller (located on the bottom of the throttle body).

i definitely need to check the throttle body out and IAC. it did it again tonight, and when i stepped on the gas to see if it "reset" the throttle linkage, it idled normally again. so i think it is definitely sticking
