Hi, I just bought an 86 Liftback that I am fixing up. I purchased the Haynes Manual but I can't find anything about inspecting the timing belt. Is there anyway to get a look at it without removing everything you need to take out to replace the belt. Every other car I've owned has had a part of the cover you could pull off to take a look. Thanks for any tips. Eugee

You typically can't tell if a timing belt is any good visually unless it is WAY overdue for replacement. A 60,000 mile belt will look just like a 1000 mile belt - just closer to failure. If you don't know when it was replaced, the best thing to do is install a new one.
