Salvage yard windshield?

I just cracked the piss out of my windshield about half hour ago. Soooo, has anyone ever put in a windshield themselves? I'm trying to get a ballpark on about how much a salvage yard windshield will go for and how much for materials and also, if it's a horribly bad idea to fix that myself as a first timer on that topic. Thanks for the input, enjoy the weekend, and don't blast heat on your windshield when it's freezing cold outside

Replacing windshields is easy, if you or a friend has done them before. If you have the tools & materials / sealants.

They are a bitch if you have limited knowledge and no tools. There is nothing worse than glass put in wrong that won’t stop leaking. Need I say more…

The price on a new windshield is that much more than a salvaged window. With a new you don’t have to worry about blemishes, rock chips and/or wiper scratches

Unless you know exactly what you're doing, I would strongly recommend you do not do this yourself. A windshield is an important part of the cars structure, and obviously a major safety issue if it ever came loose or flew off the car. Save your pennies and get it done by people with the proper tools and know how.

But if you want to get a salvage yard windscreen, go for it. Although it can be tricky to remove without damaging it. I once resorted to cutting away the A-pillers to get one out without damaging it.

If this address stays, the ultra one cut out knife for $27 is the best tool for removing glass.

Good luck

thanks for the input, i used to drink with a guy that threw in windshields, and judging by the fact that the guy was perpetually drunk and not all that mechanicaly inclined I figured, maybe if i took my time an did some research i wouldnt mess it up that bad lol. thanks for finding that tool though, id seen him use that one countless times and i had no idea what it was called lol. i am probably not going to change it right away just because going out to the wreckers is out of the way and I'm guessing I am going to need to also buy primers/sealants,that tool along with the window just after Christmas kicked my bank accounts ass. When i do get it done, I will let you guys know how bad of an idea it was or how not so terrible it went lol. thanks guys.

When I was in college, I bought a Celica with a cracked windshield for cheap. I found a windshield in decent condition at the salvage yard, so I took it to a shop that replaced windshield and had them install it.

I paid $50 for the windshield at the salvage yard, but can't remember how much I paid to have it installed (it was 20 years ago). It couldn't have been much as I was broke back then.

Anyway, I consider myself mechanically inclined, but I for a job like this, I would recommend having it installed.

It's about $100 for a new windshield installed. Takes them less than an hour and there is glass everywhere.
