I have a question out there about the 1990 Camry DX we bought for our son. Does the DX model have the headlight auto turn off feature like my 1988 and 1997 Camry LE? They don't turn off automatically when we open the door. Thanks
The auto off feature works as soon as you open the door, provided the key is removed from the ignition. There is no extra click on the light switch like some other Toyota models. I am not sure if some trim levels have the feature and others don't but it's possible.

Maybe the door switch is not working.
Thanks for clearing that up. I asked becuz on my headlight switch lever, i can turn once for park lights, then one more for headlights, then there's a last turn which is for the headlights again. But dig this, if the car is off, and i turn the switch to the last turn, it doesn't come on. But when i start the car, it comes on. However, if i have it on the last turn with the car running and i shut off the engine it doesn't go off, although i didn't try opening the door after removing the key.
Interesting, so your car does have the extra switch position. Then try leaving it there, turn the car off, get out and close the door. The lights may go off after a short delay.

To actually answer your question, only the LE models have the auto-off lights on the gen2 Camry... and then only if you have the headlights on when the ignition is 'on' then the ignition is turned off, then the front driver's door is opened. Otherwise, they stay on.
This sounds like a good way to help teach your son about responsibility (ie, taking care of your stuff and making sure the lights are off...).

Well if this is how the feature should work, i don't think it's working on my car at all. I tried it last night, but lights stayed on. If that is really how mine should work also, I think I know why it didn't. The light that should illuminate in the instrument cluster when a door is open doesn't work on my car, so i figure the door switch has something to do with that. So after i repair that, i'll give it another try.

yes stanno when u turn the switch to that extra click u can leave it there in the daytime the lights doesnt work because it has a photocell that turns the light on only at nights or if drive under any dark areas. After switching off the ignition the lights will go out two ways (1) open your door (that is if the door switch works) (2)turn the switch one click backwards and then back on.N.B. if there is any thing on top of the dash board above the instrument panel it could cover the photocell its that little round glass looking thing

You mean this, there's nothing covering it, but it doesn't look like a glass to me really. It's just round and looks like a part of the dash.
I figured it out thanks to toyodiy.com and some local forums. And I just discovered that my door switches in the front (driver's and passenger side) are missing. :S. Explains why the courtesy lights on my front doors or the cabin light doesn't come on either, even though the bulbs are good.
I doubt the courtesy light switches would be the cause of why the lights still come on in the day if i turn on the feature though, what would i need to check there?

My base model (non DX) '88 Camry sedan has this feature.
