Gen1 Strut assembly-spring spacers gen 1

Has anyone seen a complete strut assembly for gen 1. I mean something with the spring, rubbers and shock complete like I have seen for most cars. Just pull one unit out and replace the whole unit. All I have seen are replacement KYB and Monroe sensimatic struts without the springs. Also has anyone used the cheap make it last a little longer solution of rubber or aluminum spring spacers, stiffeners that are placed in the coils. Do they work ? Which are best ? I even read an article where someone placed a split heater hose around the coil and said it worked great. Any comments or leads ? I known some of you guys who can spend a lot of money on your rides are laughing but bare with me, I'm on a very limited budget. Just trying to keep my ride on the road and clean it up as much as I can. Eugee 86-Liftback. The Liftback the original sport wagon. Thanks, Peace, Eugee

Oh yea, I also read where someone said you can tighten the top main nut on the strut mount about a quarter turn and that will tighten things up a little. What do you think. I would rather do nothing then break something,

Let me start out by saying I currently have my complete suspension sitting on my workbench to be reinstalled within the next two days, minus the control arms to be R&R (remove & replace) at a later date. Read my Race Pages post and you’ll understand.

The Monroe replacement strut that I am installing does not come with springs, not many do. I am sure you can probably find them, but I am unclear as to why you would want to replace them. The steel in these springs is about the toughest thing on these Toyota’s! Seriously the need to replace springs is rare unless they are broken, or your want to go with a different vehicle ride height, or you are stepping up to a high performance handling package.

It is not clear what you want to do, there is not much you can do to the springs to improve your ride, the ride damping comes from the shock/strut hydraulic or gas chamber depending on type. When the shock/strut’s resilience is gone you need to R&R the shock/strut. The spring supports the weight of the vehicle and the shock/strut regulates the bounce of the spring = smooth or stiff ride; depending on the rating of the shock/strut.

Interesting Info

The spring spacers were originally sold to compensate for tired springs on the heavier cars and trucks. When one spring was collapsed more then the rest you could insert one of these spacers into the tried spring as an attempt to even out the ride. I don’t know about the newer types but the originals had nothing to keep them in place, so every time you’d hit a hard bump they end up on the road. Every once in while I’ see one lying to side of the road. When they first came out they were laying everywhere, looked like a flipping cow pasture.

The only thing the top nut does is securer the shock/strut ram to the mounting plate. There is a specific torque value for that nut, do not exceed it. There is a bearing below that nut and you don’t want to screw it up or worse yet break off the top of your shock/ strut.

Probably more information then you needed, but hey’ I am cooking waffles this morning…. I am just finished my last one Now to get greasy

PS> Be sure to know what your doing with struts, they can tear you up, literally

Thanks Sturdavj; That's the info I needed. Looks like I need to save some change for struts. Thanks for your reply, Eugee- 86- Liftback.

Don’t forget to inspect the strut mounting plates for wear. I replaced the ones on my 90’ Camry w/290K (current project) and probably did not need to. I did not replace the ones on my wife’s 99’ V70 Volvo w/150K, and wish I had.

I paid $18.00ea for the plates & $48.00ea for struts. I try & buy local first, unless the internet has a price + shipping I just can’t walk away from. I have established relationships with the parts counter person(s) and that is where the real help can be found, (2ND to TN of course..) both for price breaks as well as experience/knowledge in what I might need in parts/materials for a project

Good luck with yours, let us know how it turns out
