Tranny change

Has anyone changed out an auto trans for a stick? And if so, how big a pain in the butt was it. I have a 90 camry with a 3SFE eng.

Any and all info much appreciated.....Carl

Not sure. ive got a 91 dx auto. and i was wanting the same thing. most mechanics tell me that if u want a stick camry to buy a stick camry because the electronics have to be swapped and stuff also. i guess a 86-89 celica tranny mounts right up or probably another manual tranny from a 3sfe.

It can be done. if u figure anything out let me know. im interested if its easier than the mechanics tell me.

It has been done multiple times... its not too hard. There is some wiring involved, the mechanical side is fairly straightforward.

The easiest way though it still to buy a manual trans Camry.

Guys thanks for the responses, and pardon my late response. I going to research this project and see what it actually entails re: parts, prices, etc. I'll keep you posted.

I think I'm reverting back too my street racing days with my 65 Chevelle... oh how I miss that car.

Then again, it may be easier to find a stick 90 Camry?

Thanks again.....Carl

it's probbly easier to just find a 5spd camry. but the swap itself isn't too expensive.. almost the same $$ unless you're attached to the car just get a 5spd one in decent condition.

parts you need
clutch pedal, brake pedal, NEW master/slave clutch cylinder. the hard clutch line from master cylinder to trans area.. can be tricky to get in/out of the donor car. flywheel( you'll have to figure out if you have a 8 or 6 bolt crankshaft, since it's a 90 i'd say it's 8 but who knows), clutch, pressure plate, transmission, the whole shifter assembly with cables. Besure to get the rear mount bracket for the transmission since it's diffferent from the auto, but mount is same. i think that's about it. as for the trans you can use just about any trans from an I4 camry/celica up to 2000

the only electrical i had to do was wire the clutch pedal switch to neutral safetly switch. (have to press on clutch to start car) of if you like just jump the N or P and you can always start the car, and the reverse light switch.

Atobe you're probably right about a donor car, or finding a stick 90 Camry.
I'll check prices (new and used) on the parts you listed and take it from there.

Sorry for the late response guys, but, time hasn't been on my side lately.

I'll keep you posted......Carl
