Yesterday my plans were to go to the dump, and pickup the kids from school. I get in the car; and turn the key; the battery gave a slow crank but started, (acted as if the battery was going dead). I shut it down and restarted it, normal cranking and starting. I didn’t shut the car off for approx. 90 min.
I went to AutoZone to have the charging, starting, battery voltage checked. All checked good. It didn’t dawn on me at the time but by the size of his hand held meter I don’t believe the battery was load tested. If he had it would have shown a bad/low cell…right? Could my not shutting down the car give the battery enough charge to test OK? Could I be wrong in my train of thought?
This morning I get into the car to leave for work, it’s dead. Tonight I’ll pull the battery and have it tested at Advance Auto by the job tomorrow.
Hmmmm sorry this prolly wont help. but my car does that when its really cold.
cranks super slow but always starts.
my battery "tested good" also. i heard about camrys having low starting power. and theres a mod you can do to add a fuse or something.
you could always buy a new battery or charge the one you have and see if that helps any?
WhippinC, like I said, I’ll pull the battery out tonight and have Advance check it tomorrow.
Several weeks ago the temp. was down in the 20’s, (so much for living in Florida),
the battery gets shocked and slow cranks; but, always starts, its about three yrs. old, maybe its time ….
I’ll see if I can find the mod…. hopefully someone has a handle on it.
In addition to checking the battery itself, also check the connections at the battery posts/terminal ends. They need to be shinny clean and tight. Most auto parts stores sell a tool for a few dollars to clean the battery posts/cable terminals. You might consider that while you are already at Advance auto and use it before you reinstall the battery. It will one more thing you will have eliminated from the things that could possibly cause this problem.
like Mike said, check your connections and make sure they're clean. could also be the battery. if you still have any warrenty, return it for a new one. the initial cold start is slow but will crank, then it's fine afterwards.
I had a similar problem: very slow cranks in the cold, but the battery tested fine. Turned out it was the starter. I got a reman replacement and now it starts up great each time.
Last night when I got home (dark) and just for the hell of it I try and start the car. The lights on the dash came on as they came on earlier that morning. I turn the key; a slow crank and she starts, I back the car onto the driveway, and shut it down to remove the battery. Now, I’m not sure it’s the battery but I’ll have it checked anyway. (Guys the post and connections are clean).
I disconnect the neg. terminal then the positive and lay them to the side and remove the battery. (Now, this is really bothering me). I check the fuse links attached to the pos. post, to lift the cover I place my hand around the plastic connector and it’s warm, is it supposed to be warm, or is something beginning to short out causing the condition?
More drama: Now for the curve ball, while taking out the battery I had my drop light (75 watt bulb) if memory serves me correct lying near the connector.
I will attempt to duplicate the condition tonight, when I put the battery back in. I’ll run it and see if the connector gets warm…. without the drop light.
