oil consumption - 90 camry

just finished changing the oil and found out that my car consumed about 2 liters of oil in the last 5000 kms ..

i know that's not a good thing, but considering the age of the car, i'm not really surprised..i'm like the 4th or 5th owner so there's a good chance previous owners might've messed up on the maintenance schedule

just wanted to know what fix i might be looking at now or once the oil consumption gets worse..thanks in advance for the replies

Well, you could have an oil leak or be burning oil. One common area for oil leaks is at the distributor oil seal. You can reach underneath to see whether you feel oil. If you can't see an obvious leak either there or elsewhere, the fluorescent dyes available work well to trace it.

It depends on where the oil is going. Do you see oil leaking from the valve cover or oil pan or oil pump? Does the engine blow bluish smoke all the time? The piston rings may be worn, the valve stem guides and seals may leak. What does the engine look like do you see oil spots on the ground? What oil do you use?

You can try a thicker weight oil like a 40 weight one and from what I've read switching to a high mileage oil which usually has a little higher viscosity might help.
