running on empty = hurt tranny?

my dad took the car to work due to the other cars being in the shop today, and when he was on his way home he said the car ran out of gas before he could fill it up.

the kicker is he said he was going 65 mph, the car lurched, and then died. normally the o/d in the v6 camry for me kicked in at 40 mph, and the rpms at 40 mph were at 1600.

now the o/d "seems" to kick in at 43 mph, and the rpms are kinda stuck at 2000.

did this lurch and dieing of the engine at high speed when it was in overdrive somehow affect this?

EDIT: reverse is fine

Any chance that the 'power' button was pressed? How about the overdrive button?

o/d and power buttons both are off, lights werent on, i just did a manual shifting mode (bar removing connections) i went L - 2 - D (od off) od on. it locks partially but the rpms dont drop like they should. it locks at 2000 but doesnt lock and drop. you cant feel the torque lock in the acceleration either.

my dad just told me that this is what it was doing 2 years ago when it started getting warm. he suspects worn parts etc. this would make sense.

as i dont see how the engine dieing will harm it. the lurch is normal too when the rpms go from 2300 to 0 in about .5 seconds.
