S5* with a VZ

Hi all;

There is an abundance V6 Camrys here in Jamaica, but no 5 Speeds for 'em. Could the S5x 5speeds that will mate to the 3S-FE also mate to the VZ engines (1VZ, 2VZ 3VZ & 4VZ)?

They bolt up just fine to each other. Some things to note:

- You will need a custom clutch. You will us a 3s-gte flywheel and pressure plate with a 3s-gte clutch disk with S5x transmission splines. This is available from multiple places...
- You will need to do a custom axle support bracket. The V6 and I4 brackets are different. You have to use 4-cylinder axles with the 4-cylinder trans.

Hope that helps.

Alot!

Couple questions. You said: "You will us a 3s-gte flywheel and pressure plate with a 3s-gte clutch disk with S5x transmission splines".

Does this eliminate me needing a custom clutch disc?

That is a custom disc. The regular S5x disc has a smaller friction area, but it works. The custom disc uses the full area of the pressure plate and flywheel.

Cool!

Ok, for the axle bracket. Is there "tested proven" fab that works, i was thinking maybe getting both the bracket from the 4 & 6 banger and trying to combine 'em with some cutting/welding? Would that work?

Yeah, since you will only be putting 155hp through the clutch, a 5s-fe/3s-fe clutch would probably be fine, now that you mention it. They guys that use the custom clutch are pushing 250hp+, generally.

There is not tested proven way. I dont' know anybody who has yet done what you are looking to do... I just know it works because the exact opposite way works (4-cyl with the v6 trans). The brackets are both cast iron, so you plan might be difficult. You will probably want to get both brackets and start with some measurements. You might be able to get away with some drilling and mild machining to get it to work. If I remember right, the holes are like 1/2" off or so...
