USA fan and timing question!!!!

Is the 91 camry 4 cylinder fan a mechanical one or electric?

i heard mechanical ones suck power, if so i want to switch to electric!

and also. i havent hooked up a timing light. just been experimenting with timing. if i advance timing a good bit. should i run midgrade or premium to smooth my idle a tiny bit. its a ever so slight bit rough. i read in a performance book that u want to use higher octane with a timing advance

thank you!!!!!!!!

LOL... have you looked in the engine bay? There is no mechanical link between the fans and the motor, and they have nice fat electrical plugs going to them.

As for the timing, you shouldn't mess with it unless you have a timing light. Make 100% sure you aren't going to far advanced, or you could be seriously hurting your motor. I hope you know what pinging/detonation sounds like, or you could already be there...

Right, fan is electric.

It's unlikely you'll get any more power by just taking the stock engine and advancing timing. Even if you were to squeeze out a tiny bit more power, you'd only be able to tell on a dyno. Higher octane and advanced timing are only effective if you have the engine and compression to make the best use of it. If all you do it fill your tank with high octane and advance the timing, you may actually see a drop in performance, not to mention the added cost of premium fuel.

Just making sure. you never know. ive never seen a mechanical fan so i wouldnt know.

and definitly not advancing too much.
definitly no pinging or detonation. plugs are perfect.
those two things are something that you cant not notice.

exspecially when you listen to your engine every time the keys in it meticulousy

i dont have any pinging so i guess ill run on regular like i have.
just read it in a book. figured theres some truth to it.

i know high compression engines like cadillacs and such need it.

Well... My 1.6 in my Geo runs just dandy all the way up to 24* timing initial. Just throwing that out there. No pinging, pre-detonation, missing, nothing. And it runs like a bat outta hell in the top end.

A mechanical fan... Is obvious. They don't go into transverse setups like the Camry.

Both my original '90 Camry and the current Alltrac needed '89 to keep from pinging, even the stock timing. This is only at reasonably high loads though. I just used 89 instead of 87.

The only trasverse engine with a mechanical fan I'm aware of is the original Mini - but the radiator was also mounted sideways...
