1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Bounced it off the governer at 110mph. Twice. This was in my mom's '91 base model. My '88 is geared way wrong to go that fast safely... At least not with 240k miles on the engine.
Yeah, something is up if it won't do over 90. I have issues keeping it under 85... I do all this and, still coax between 30 and 40 mpg out of it. The all-trac only does 25 mpg... I'm thinking of going more performance with it. Not so much to lose with mileage.
Edit: I apologize for any typos. I'm doing this all on my Galaxy S (Android) device.

Most of the gen2 Camrys have a limiter at 180kph (112mph). Some don't though, and I also have a first gen Rev/Speed meter that gets rid to it....
I was able to easily hit the speed limiter in my original 4-cyl 5-speed, my turbo 3s-fe / 3s-gte Camry didn't have a limiter that I found. Once the Alltrac has the new motor, it won't have a limiter because of the Rev/Speed Meter...
This is on a closed circuit racecourse, of course.

PS. I'm scared to find the top speed of my WRX - it should be well north of the original 135mph top speed limiter (removed with an ECU flash).

My grandfather took his non-turbo, base-model impreza up to 140, just to see if it would max out the speedo...
Where's the speed limiter on a gen2? Is it programmed in the ECU?
Yup. In the ECU. You can eliminate it with the standard methods by using the wire that comes from the gauge cluster and goes to the ECU. The ECU doesn't care about the actual car speed other than for the speed limiter (and I think later gen2's might throw a code if the wire is cut and left that way for long enough).
