Low Idle

Hello,

Newbie here with '91 Camry DX.

Is it possible to adjust the idle with the throttle cable?

It is attached to throttle body on a bracket with an adjustable nut. Can I just make the throttle cable a little bit tighter?

Or do I have to do the IAC valve?

Also the light behind the heater controls is gone. It doesn't light up when dash lights are on. How hard is it to replace? Anyone know how to do it?

Thank you,

Honda ow

There is a little recessed screw in the throttle body, on the firewall side. Turn it counter clockwise to up the idle. That light is also burnt out in my camry.

For the HVAC light replacement, it's not too easy, but 30 min and simple tools is enough.

Take out the ashtray.
Remote the cluster finish panel screws (two at the top above the HVAC controls).
Pull off the finish panel.
Remove the 4 screws for the radio and pull it out (no need to disconnect the wiring harness).
Now it gets tricky. With a mirror or a person with a very small head, look up and you'll see a pair of green wires leading to a socket. You may have to pry a bit underneath the temperature control.
Pull the socket free and replace the bulb. I believe the bulb is the same as the one in the glove compartment light.
Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure to test the bulb by turning on the parking lights before you put everything back.

Thanks nopain00. I didn't realize this was in my email. I was checking this website for response and did not see one. Just found in my email.

You are right about not too easy to replace. I broke the HVAC face plate at the junkyard trying to get out the bulb. Didn't realize you could just pop it out from pulling the wire(s) out.

FYI, you're better off buying a new bulb than taking one from a salvage yard. These bulbs burn out pretty quickly, and with all the labor that goes into replacing them, the extra buck or two for a new one that will last longer is worth it.

Dear nopain00,

Thanks for the tip on new bulb.

I will probably just get a gooseneck LCD light at the dollar store to clip on my dash to fix this. I am not too good at fine and delicate kinds of work projects.

Another low-tech solution: make a fist and pound down on the dash above the heater controls (yes, really). It sometimes knocks the filament back to give the bulb a little more life.
