transmission pops out of 5th gear

I finally started driving my 89 with 4 cyl, 5spd manual transmission again after replacing the transmission. It runs like a champ, but it will pop out of 5th gear, all other gears are fine. I assume there needs a little adjustment to be made, but where?

Thanks for the help.

A little more info: it seems it is gaspedal position dependent: the more power you give the engine, the stronger the force trying to push the gear shifter out of 5th and into neutral.
It's puzzeling.....

Unless there are external linkage issues (check motor mounts, etc), you have a bad transmission.

Popping out of gear generally means worn internals and a need for a full rebuild.

It also seems it doesn't go far enough into the gear. 3rd gear has the same issue (it doesn't pop out, but a little tap on the gear shifter makes it come out). 5th just gets pushed out, and doesn't engage very far. I wonder if I have to adjust the gear selector cable somehow. I just can't find where there are adjustment points, and the manual is not showing anything either.

Is it harder to pull out of gear while engine braking (instead of being on the gas)?

yes it is. the harder you push the gas, the faster it pops out. I do need to check the rear engine mount

It could be that you have a bad 5th gear shiftfork and the counter shaft bearing could have walked out of place. To fix this, you have to open the case and do a rebuild or source out a good tranny.

It (5th gear) pops out real easy when I take the foot of the gas, even by a little bit.
Are the shift cables fixed length or are they adjustable somehow? I would like to see if the gear stays in if I shorten the gear selector cable by half a turn. But how?

There are no adjustments. All detents, spring action, etc. is handled internally in the transmission.
