How can i remove these?

Hi all;

I seen these things on my tail lights/trunk light... obviously the previous owner placed them there to stop water from leaking in the lens housing.

But i'm not sure what they are or how to get 'em off.

Do they look familiar to anyone?

Thanks in advance

Looks like some sort of foil or duct tape, definitely not OEM. Just pull it off and scrape off the residue. Soap and water should do the trick.

Incidentally, to keep water from getting in the lenses, you should replace the gaskets behind them. It's a cheap fix and looks better than what you have.

Uh Uh dude. This isn't duct tape or foil. This stuff is hard to get off.

I tried by hand to just rip it off and it didn't even budge. I think i've seen this stuff on zinc roofs locally, to stop leaks.

But I can't find anyone who knows how to remove it. The adhesive behind the shiny foil looking part feels tough like rubber.

You mean like roof flashing tape? Is there a tar-like adhesive on the other side?

That stuff is very hard to get off. I would try heat from a hot-air gun first to see if you can loosen the adhesive. The lenses are plastic so be careful not to melt them.

Solvents may work, but they may also dissolve the plastic as well as your paint.

I would recommend heat and a plastic putty knife to get the bulk of it off, and then some elbow grease.

Gunk adhesive removal

Make sure to seal up the body crimp on the outside ot the trunk seal ( factory defect ) Its a mystery leak that not to many people know about.

You would be amazed how good GUNK ADHESIVE REMOVAL in the bright yellow can loosen glue-like material if you let it set for a minute or two!

ALSO Replace the Molding at the trunk site> On the photo you can see holes where water can get in also unless sealed as well.

When done have a friend put a sprinkler to the car while you are in the trunk watching for drips

P.S Make sure he is a GOOD FRIEND so he wont pull a fast one and leave you in the trunk
