Oil Pan Gasket

Well guys its going too happen this weekend. After completing my timing chain project my next task was going to change the oil pan gasket and lower engine mount. Today after picking up my son from school I noticed a puddle of oil in the driveway, lying on the ground I see the dripping coming from the lower corner of the oil pan. The only thing that comes to mind that may have caused the leak is when I had the jack holding up the engine when I did the belt. Since Toyota uses silicone instead of a pan gasket maybe the pressure of the jack/wood block helped the 167K silicone to deteriorate and leak? I'm hoping.

While reading my Haynes manual I notice that to replace the oil pump you have to remove the pan, pickup tube etc. and than the oil pump housing to remove the pump....is that correct, or did I miss something.

Has anyone done an oil pump job?.....Carl

When you were changing the timing belt, did you place a jack right underneath the oil pan? That could have very likely caused the leak. Are you sure that you didn't deform the pan?

I haven't done an oil pump replacement on this car, but I believe that it requires just as much work as the timing belt. In fact, you have to remove the timing belt. Once you've gotten off the crossmembers, front exhaust, oil pan, oil strainer, and timing belt, you can remove the bolts holding the oil pump in place and tap it off.

Out of curiosity, why are you removing the oil pump too? It seems like you said that you have an oil leak from the pan. Are you also getting low pressure?

x2

Yeah, and you should always put a piece of wood in between the jack and the oil pan to prevent damage.

Guys thanks for the replies.

I did have a flat piece of wood between the jack and the pan. The day after I did the belt I changed the oil, the pan was in good shape; no leaks.

Tomorrow I'll jack it up and take a better look, clean the area and run the engine and see what and where the leak is actually coming from.

Guys it just seems too coincidental that the dripping is coming from the lowest (slanted end) part of the pan. Tomorrow will tell.

Chrysler had the slant six....Toyo has the slant four (oil pan that is).

As far as the oil pump, that was more a curiosity question. My engine is nice and quiet, and runs like a SOB.....so far.

Guys again thanks for the replies.....Carl

Cleaned up the area, the leak is coming from the lowest corner of the oil pump. Just for the hell of it I checked the bolt; it tightened up approx. 1/8 turn. The leak slowed down to almost nothing (a slight ooze). This I can live with; but I won't. Now my oil pump question is coming to be.

According to the manual you must remove the oil pan and related parts to remove the oil pump case; I don't want to remove the case, I only want to remove the oil pump. If you remove the timing belt, idler and crank pulleys etc. why can't you remove the oil pump without having to remove the case....maybe there's no room to get at it? It's not part of the case, connected too it yeah, but not part of.

Guys am I mis-reading it; maybe its me; having a senior moment? Is the manual wrong?

Enlighten me......Carl

Guys, yesterday was oil pump day....I didn't have to remove the pump case as Haynes and Chilton manuals state. The only reason I can think of is possibly the early 3sfe engine oil pump was integral with the case. My Toy was build in 4/90.....I lucked out. The "O" ring was so brittle that it fell apart when I removed the pump. Ran the engine before putting the covers on....no leaks.

It was a good day.....Carl
