position on shifter has moved

Hello forum

first time user/reader of this forum. I have a 1990 camry dx that I want my children to use. Its been sitting in garage for about 5 years. Of the few things that need to be fixed is the shifter and speedometer. With concerns with the shifter. The camry has an automatic tranny hocked up to a 3fse engine (base model) in order to get the car in drive I half to move the shifter all the way down to first gear. I think either the shift lever or the cable needs to be replace. If the cable needs to be replace what part number do I need and is there a how-to to replace the cable on the forum. Also what else should I check.

Best regards
Scott

First check on the front of the transmission (near where the transmission dipstick enters the transmission) to see if the shift cable adjustment bolt is loose.

Does it go into park and reverse where it is supposed to?

When the shifter is in the '1' position, does it shift gears as if it is in Drive?

Does your car have the 'Norm/Power' ECT switch?
