Spun Bearings? Worth the time, effort & resources; What Ya Think?

1989 Corolla GT-S Twin Cam; I am still doing the research on this motor, To see if this motor is worth re-habilitating. I am thinking I would drop the drive train in my 86 Corolla DLX, as a sleeper

I have a friend at work, who picked up this car. Drove it for a while. One day on the freeway, on the way home from work the car started to make some noise and began losing power, after he took the next exit the engine stopped running and would not restart. Had his father in-law help him tow it home. Car has not started since. I asked him if it was low on oil, he said yes but that there was not any dash indications. He said he thought that it got hot and that is where the problem lies.

The girl he bought this car from told him her father had pulled the motor and pumped up the intake/cams? and possibly the exhaust.

I asked him to check and see if he could find contact information so I might check the details to see what was done.

This Toyota thing is contagious…….

This should be in the Corolla forums for more help but like with anything, some advice we can still give

If the lower end is siezed due to running low on oil, it is almost always recommended to replace the entire engine just because the lower end may only be the start of some deeper damage, especially if the engine was running without oil for a while.

While running low on oil will not normally turn on the 'oil' light on, the oil light is only a pressure indicator, not level. If there is no oil, well...the light should turn on, but that is usually pass-the-fact the engine is toasted.

I'd recommend a full new engine as a rebuilt will be costly if the damage is significant.

Thanks.

Because I own both a Camry & a Corolla I spend time in both locations. I feel comfortable with advice I find here.

What are some things to look for when checking out car for damage, short of dropping the oil pan?

Haha no problem

Hmm...metal shards/pieces is the best indicator. if you find an actual 'chunk' of metal...well that is not good. You could try check the top end (valve cover) for any damage up there.
