2nd Generation Passenger side CV shaft removal

I seem to be having issues with removing the passenger-side CV shaft on our '91 Toyota Camry.

Clutch grenaded and so far as I know, the transmission has to come down to replace the clutch. The passenger side cv shaft is secured with that bracket, just like it would be on most any other Camry. After unbolting the bracket, though, it is still stuck in place. It seems to be caught on some sort of sleeve, and I can't move it enough to get it off of the sleeve.

Tips for removal of the passenger-side CV shaft?

Not sure which bracket are you talking about?

I will assume for the purpose of this answer you are referring to the bracket mounted to side of the engine block, which the axle assembly passes through.

On the outboard side of the bracket there is a large snap ring which can be released using large pliers or a pair of vice grips. One released slide the snap ring toward the hub/wheel end, the axle should the pull out/free from the side of the transaxle.

Okay. I removed that snap ring and the bearing shifted out of the bracket a half inch or so with some love from a prybar. Is the bearing supposed to come out on the shaft?

The bearing is press fitted onto the axle shaft. It leaves with the shaft.

Keep prying, my guess is your spline shaft is hanging up, or gunk build up on the bearing carrier.

Pass side does not have a retainer ring on the input/transaxle- side/end of axle, only the you one have already removed.

It's a good idea to replace the case seal while you have the axle out ~ $8<>$10

Yes, those were also on the list... I'm replacing the clutch, so my guess is that a lot of seals are gonna get replaced. Input seal, both shaft seals...

Speaking of, any tips for removing the trans? This is a 4cyl 2wd 5sp base-model.

Thanks much!

I replaced the automatic on my 90’ Camry front wheel drive.
To do this I pulled my engine & trans out the top. I did the work outside the box.

My 86’ Corolla is a 5spd, when I replace the clutch I plan to do the same. I cannot imagine doing it in the box. I would imagine it is possible, I will defer to others who may have done it. You may want to do a forum search as to the pro’s & con’s.

If you do decide to pull engine and yours is a Alltrac (four wheel drive model) you will want to read the pro’s & con’s for pulling it out the top verses pulling it out the bottom.

Ordinarily, yes, I would also pull it out the top. However, I have no issues working entirely by feel if my fat head doesn't fit and I also don't happen to have a hoist.
