Broken camshaft

Hi all
First time posting. The camshaft broke on my 1986 Camry Anyone know the cause apart from age? Not a cheap part and very hard to get in Costa Rica. What do I have to check before installing the new one. Also assume broken cannot be fixed.

About the only way this will happen is if a bearing seizes from lack of oil. Or there might have been a flaw from the factory that eventually caused the failure but that would be very rare. You should look into replacing the entire head not just the camshaft.

Replacing the head here will probably cost more than the car. About 3 months ago we had to replace the head gasket. I fear that the problem was that the head base was rectified previous to installing but the camshaft tunnel was not. I am wondering what to do now and where to get a camshaft. Toyota here wants almost $ 600 for a new one and will take 1 month to deliver.

Are there any places out there that do performance cams? Might be able to find one cheaper than that.

Even then, perhaps importing a performance cam from the states will be cheaper than buying a Toyota OEM unit at the dealer... And you can increase highway or city power as well.

Have been looking at internet places trying to find some place where I might buy one but results have not been good. Does anyone out there know of a good place? Thanks a lot

Is this a Gen 1 or a Gen 2 Camry? I'm not sure which model the '86 was.

He probably would have mentioned if it was the intake or exhaust camshaft it it was the 3s-fe... the 2s-e has a single hollow camshaft.

It probably broke due to a loose cam cap or worn bearing surface. I have generally only seen cams break when they are not held correctly (they vibrate and break). High RPM may also do it, but there's no chance of that on a 2s-e...

I would suggest finding a junkyard that will send you one from the US, or maybe somebody here on the boards can do it for you. When you put it back together, carefully check all the clearances or it could happen again.

I think it happened when we changed the head gasket. The bottom was planed but the camshaft tunnel was not cheched. Probably warped.
