How to bench test a starter?

I wish to bench test a starter taken out of a SV21 1990 Camry, 4 Cylinder. I connected batter –ve to the body of the starter and battery +ve to the copper screw (to which the car battery wire was connected). Nothing happens. If I connect +ve battery terminal to the covered thick wire on the opposite side, then the motor spins but the ‘bolt/plunger’ does not jump out to engage the flywheel.
I suppose I need to connect the +ve to the copper screw as I did originally and also make a connection from +ve battery terminal to the brown/black terminal on the starter (where the other wire in the car was plugged in). How thick this wire needs to be? I am using 200AM jump-starting wires for other two connections.
Please help.
Thanks in anticipation.

you need 3 wires batt - goes to case which is right then + goes to the bolt type connector on the starter case.. then the third is the trigger wire (the one that gets power when you turn the key to start on the ign) which is also + when you connect the trigger that should enage the plunger and turn the motor at the same time.
