how to replace ATF filter in 90 Camry???

I'd like to tackle for the first time to open my 90 Camry transmission fluid pan, clean off the magnets and replace the filter. Pretty sure none of this has ever been done before. I have the shop manual and it seems to me I need to:

drain fluid while hot and drop pan
carefully scrape off all traces of old gasket
clean off the magnets attached to the pan

and then it is not so clear. How do I get at the filter? Any tricks?

Finally put on the new gasket and retighten the pan screws using a torque wrench and a crisscross pattern. Refill with fluid.

Would the gasket and filter be available at auto stores or is there something Toyota will only stock?

I believe these are pretty common beyond OEM. I found an A/T filter and gasket set @ rockauto.com that I plan to purchase next week, unless the local Napa can get them for me.

I have not been into a tran in many years but as I recall, when you drop the pan, the filter is right there, just waiting to be removed. I could be wrong about this though since I'cve never entered a Toyota Tran. GL.

its sealant not a gasket. get the toyota or equivalent gasket sealant. you just trace a line around the pan edges, tighten to torque wait a bit and then its sealed, dry, and ready to go
