2nd Generation New member, two old Camrys :)

Hello from Australia! Just thought I'd share some photos of my two Camrys. The blue one is a Holden Apollo SLX, which is basically a rebadged SV21 Camry with a carburetter-ed version of the 3S-FE (3S-FC). It doesn't go (electrical problem) and is being used as parts for the red car, which I only got today.

The red car is a 1988 Camry CS (base model, Australian designation). It's a bit rough but goes well and just needs a bit of a clean up! It's fuel injected, unlike the blue car.

Both cars are five speed manuals.

All three cars (the white VN Commodore, and the two Camrys) are just "beaters" for having a bit of a drive around the paddock, but I've learnt a lot mechanically by pulling them both to pieces and I must say, I've really come to appreciate the build quality of these old Toyotas, especially when contrasted to the white Commodore wagon (which doesn't come close in terms of overall refinement).

Welcome to the forums nice to see people still interested in the gen 2. Looks like you've got a bit of work ahead of you.

How is the rust on those things? It doesn't seem too bad to me, just faded paint.

The rust is minimal on both cars. Pretty much nothing on the red car and only a little around the back window seal on the blue car.

Cars don't seem to rust in Australia as much as they do in the US, perhaps it's the climate?

What's especially interesting is that both cars were never kept undercover by their previous owners! (Hence the terrible paintwork)

Cars rust here due to road salt (snow/ice prone locations) or air salt (islands, beach towns). None of my Camrys have significant rust.

What's up with every Australian car having a tow bar? I've always wondered... I'm always the odd car with one around here (I use it to tow trailers rarely and more often for my bike rack).

Australia only I believe, but only for a while because emissions regulations tightened in the early 90's and the carby'd Camry was killed off, as were many other carburettor vehicles and pretty much anything that didn't run on unleaded gasoline.

Also remember that in Australia, we get a lot more "base" models than you Americans to keep entry-level prices down, because cars are generally so much more expensive over here.

For example, a brand new 2011 Toyota Camry (Altise) costs more than US$32 000 in Australia, and that's the base model. Over in the US, you could buy a decent BMW 3-series for that yes?

I have no idea! Haha, all I know is it's extremely hard to find parts for them. I swear I searched the entire internet for a fuel pump for that car, but to no avail.

$32k would get you out the door with a 'base' model 3-series here (with taxes and all). Which is a fairly well equipped car (328i sedan with a manual trans). Its funny what they don't give you though. To really feel like you are driving a good BMW, you have to spend closer to $40k on a 3-series.
