Air vents

Does anyone know how to remove this center air vent, and fix the control flap inside? the air only comes out the top vent, i know why but i cannot fix it due to the vent assembly being stuck inside the dash.

I dont want to tear the dash apart just for a convenience fix.

Sounds like its time for a trip to the junkyard to test out some different methods. I have taken the whole dash pad off, but I don't remember exactly how it all went together. I don't think I ever took those vents out - they just came out with the dash pad.

i checked with the FSM seems like it comes out with the whole dash as it has 3 screws in the back of it going into the dash holding it on...(pointed into the car)

I have the same exact problem. I assume it's common? I still haven't got around to taking the dash apart. I'd really appreciate a small write-up if you do pull the dash, 'though.

i havent seen many gen 2's in yards here....

i did a quick fix, but it ended up failing. You can punch out the two directional pieces, it takes some confidence that the plasic wont break, but once you do that, you can pin the flap up, and i taped it to the top of the vent interior. unfortunately the heat and cold cause the tape to lose its glue hold and it came down again. its annoying because the air out of the top does nothing but vent the roof. plus the air comes out much faster from the center vents, and not the top

Center vent repair

fixed the problem without removing the vents!!!!!!

IF YOU WANT ONLY AIR FROM THE CENTER DIRECTIONAL VENTS, DO THIS. It is PERMANENT.

first you do this with the vents, NOTE: there are two metal rings on the vents on the drivers side of both vent controls. if you have one fall into the blower, turn the air onto FACE only, then press high. it will blow out the metal ring. this ring prevents freewheeling of the vents and adds resistance so they stay in place when the air is on:

then you pull on the flap on the inside, you want to break the tab holding it to the non adjusting side, where it just spins. (passenger side tab). once you pull this out, the air will flow freely out the center 2 vents, with minuscule amounts of air out the top vent.

This is the vent, with the tab broken in the second photo. no need to remove the dash pad if you want use of your center directionals again. quick easy fix. Albeit a bit cheap

He just pulled the control flap out and left it out. That would make 80%+ of the air go out the main vents with the rest going out the top vent... not a bad idea!

i made sure the drivers side on both (with the metal ring around the push tabs) slid near its hole, then pushed the pass side in also. then it popped into place again.

it feels kind of sketchy and like itll break, but the vent tabs are pretty thick plastic.
