Hard Starting

I have an '88 Camry 4-cyl with a 5-speed, recently I have been working on getting it to not run rich. So far I have done plugs, wires, cap, oxygen sensor and air filter. Most recently I adjusted the timing on the car which was off quite a bit (at least 5+ degrees, the markings only go to 15 and i'd ballpark it at 22-25 degrees BTDC) so I adjusted it back to 10 degrees BTDC. However since then, when it has been sitting for a while, it is hard to start the first time, it will turn over for quite a while before it starts up. After that first start however, if I stop the car again it will start again without any trouble at all. Any ideas what could cause this? The car still seems to be running a bit rich, could these two issues be related? Thanks for any help.

cold start injector could be faulty, its connected into the fron of the intake manifold on the 4 cylinder and the side on the v6

If the oxygen sensor was replaced, there is pretty much no way that the car is running rich - unless there you are getting a check-engine light. You may still be getting bad gas mileage or bad smell from the exhaust though...

When you checked the timing, did you have the T and E1 connections jumpered in the diagnostics port in the engine bay? If not, the timing will read more advanced than it should.

As for the hard starting, it is probably some part of the cold start injections system. Most often the Cold Start Injector Time Switch fails - it is located on the water outlet neck. Search this forum for information on how to test and read stories of other people's problems with it.

I am still getting a 'rich' smell, could it just need time to readjust the computer and such? I have yet to get a check engine light on the car but it won't pass emissions.

I did jump the T and E1 connectors when I did the timing, however when i took the jump wire out, it didnt seem to make a difference when I rechecked the timing, could this be pointing to another issue?
