2nd Generation taillights/breaklights 88 camry

When my headlights are on, my outside tail lights shut off when I step on the brake pedal but the brake lights on the trunk and the small one in the window work fine. The outer tail lights work fine without headlights on.

Got a couple good (I think,no burns on circuit board) tail light fail sensors for the trunk, but then the outer ones would not turn on at all with either of them installed!!? They only work with the BAD sensor (obvious burn on the circuit board) plugged in.

I dont get it.

I had the same problem on mine , I fixed it by cleaning the terminals with a wire brush. and the is a lubricant for the connections..

Thanks,Ill try that. I just dont get why they would work fine when the headlights are off if its dirty connections.

Now its time to check the fuses. You can also easily test the brake light switch - it is at the top of the brake pedal (it acts as the 'stop' for the top of the pedal travel). Check for power on the chassis plug (on one side) and check that there is continuity between the two pins when the brake pedal is depressed.

I would guess still that there is a wiring problem in the trunk. Check for torn/worn/frayed wires around the trunk hinge and around/near the outer tail lights.

I had this problem. For me turned out to be the ground wire next to the tail light bulb. When I hit the brakes the tail light would go out.
