Is this necessary? I'd like to know for sure or can I simply crank the engine over with the EFI fuse pulled until the oil light goes off.

Seriously, anyone ? Or can I just spray it a good bit with some oil and remove the EFI fuse and crank it until the oil light goes off ?

I had the oil pump out on my 1989 Camry 4 cyl. when changing out the timing belt, water pump, camshaft seal, crankshaft seal, oil pump shaft seal, oil pump spaghetti seal. I lightly greased the parts where there was metal to metal contact. Helps protect the parts until oil reaches them when starting the engine. Not sure if it was the proper way to do it but it worked for me.

On the engines I have built (non-Toyota) I have done just that... just crank without firing the motor (fuse removed, crank trigger removed, coil unplugged, etc) until the top end of the motor gets oil (along with the turbo on my Subaru). It should be fine that way. I do like the idea of lightly greasing/lubing the metal-to-metal contact areas though.

Back in the day.... we would use STP (not a lot of product, in those back & white TV days... as my kids refer to them) to assemble fresh parts. It stayed put fairly well, util engine was cranked over (w/no coil wire in place)

Today, I would check out Lucas oil products,

But I am sure there are equal brands as well
