Reinterested - couple questions about the ol' camry
Hey guys,
I havent been on here in a while, because ive been doing a lot of work to my 3000GT. However, im thinking of selling the 3000 and getting back into the good old camry because she is much more reliable.
I do have some questions though.
1991 3SFE Auto w/ 70K miles
I need a new radiator. Do any celica radiators fit (want a polished alum one w/ slim fans)?
I want peoples views on putting a turbo on the 3SFE? Im thinking of using an MR2 manifold and running an adaptor with a t3/t4 turbo at 5-6lbs of boost. (lower than ct26 internal wastegate) - and i'm aware of the 3sgte swap. I wanna know about the 3SFE!
-In addition, what injectors would work on the 3SFE and what kind of management unit should i run? (SAFC?)
The car is lowered on Intrax Springs and the front sits pretty flush, however, id like the rear to no longer have that shadowed look. Suggestions on a spacer size to run to get the rear wheels flush with the fender?
When im on the highway for a while and come off and stop at a traffic light, the car stalls out. Any suggestions?

Clean the throttle body and the idle air control valve while they are still on the car. Many times this eliminates the stalling you are experiencing. Here's a good DIY on the later 5SFE engine. Your 3SFE engine should be almost identical:
You can get 6th gen Celica radiators to fit - the inlet and outlet are in the right place. It is about 2" taller and 1" narrower (remove lower mounts, mount on front swaybar brackets and clearance hood). I believe CamryGT4 (another user on here) did a different radiator, possibly from a different Celica with possibly less work.
Turbo on a 3s-fe is fine. The 3s-gte manifold works, and you can run stock CT26 boost reasonably safely. The biggest issue is making sure fueling and timing is handled well. The solutions to that are beyond this thread...
Depending on wheel width and offset, you probably want a 15-25mm spacer for the rear to get them flush. Remember that you will probably need to roll/cut the inner fender to get a good look out of it.
If the car idles well otherwise, you probably need to check/adjust the level of fluid in your transmission - do you notice it downshifting 'late' while you are slowing down? If so, that's the problem. Otherwise, a good cleaning of the Idle-Air Controller and throttle body would be good too.

the stock gen 2 radiator and fans are good enough to keep the motor cool even when you boost it. I was running that way with my 3sgte swap for over a year and never once over heated. this was with the camry being my daily driver in south florida heat.

Here's my camry ^
Current: B+G Springs, KYB GR2 Struts, Erebuni Bodykit(uninstalled), 3SGTE/E52 swap, Crane HI-6S Ignition Box, Crane Timing Retard Controller.
Plans: Here
i cleaned the throttle body and it seems to have worked. and helped my throttle response a bit.
but here is the big news! =]
Once i get the rest of the problems ironed out with my 3000GT, she is getting sold and the Camry is getting a makeover!
Some things i was possibly thinking:
16x7 +35 Enkei RPF1's in Silver
Debadge the trunk
Fill in the washer sprayer holes on my hood
Fix the small bit of rust on the DS rear fender
JDM sidemarker lights (so that you can see the turn signals from the side)
Better set of fog lights with a 8000K DDM HID kit in them
Get the car repainted the factory silver and have a fresh camry again!
Opinions/Suggestions?
Something i need an opinion on is the best sounding exhaust to run on these cars (3sfe)
I was thinking off flex pipe have 2.25" piping into a glass pack resonator and then into a magnaflow muffler with the tips built on that kind of keeps the stock appearance.
Opinions?
On the '91 I just rodded out the cat and ran it to a glasspack, no resonator. Sounds great. The All-Trac got the same treatment but the PO installed a glasspack as a resonating chamber and it's quiet but sounds nice. Depends on the sound you want. The '91 is quiet if a little grumbly unless I stomp on it, but the All-Trac is quiet no matter how hard I try to make noise.

Im going for the sound of a wrx...well as close to it as i can get. just a very deep rumble. i dont want it to be too loud since i DD the car.
Generally good choices. I would say go for as close to a 4100/4300k color temp on the HIDs for the most light and the least blinding of other drivers. I never thought the blue light things was cool anyway...
As for the exhaust. 2.25" is a good diameter unless you are going for big power (turbo, etc.). Use the largest mufflers/resonators you can to get the deepest sound possible - it will quiet it down a fair amount too. It will never sound like a WRX, but you can rest assured that it will also never sound like a Honda.

And it isn't too loud unless you really get on it.
that is one ghetto lookin exhaust haha but it doesnt sound bad. i might just run the magnaflow because the ones they make with the dual tips kinda look like the stock v6 tips
