The radiator in my '88 Camry is halfblocked off by the bumper... Just wondering if this was a design flaw of some sort or meant to be this way? Wouldn't it heatsoak behind the bumper?
In other countries (all but US), the front bumper is vented and doesn't go down quite as far, letting a lot more air to the radiator. The bumper is not as 'deep' either (less padding). You can thank the US 5mph crash test requirement for that.
Then again... I have run my Alltrac with the stock front bumper, two bikes on the top and 4 people inside up a 10+ mile hill in 90*F heat at 4000-7000 ft. elevation (essentially floored for 10+ minutes) with no overheating. So to me, the cooling system is fine and I wouldn't worry about it. Air gets in through the grill (obviously) and some gets in from below the bumper (there is a 1" or so opening down there).
If anything is under-designed, it is the brakes. You have to be careful on any decent downhill mountain road.

Hell, I just floored it down the section of I17 between Flagstaff and Camp Verde. Between a 6 and 10% grade for 50odd miles... Was fun!
How would we go about getting some JDM bumpers, Charlie?
Good question. Atobe imported mine. You gotta know people who know people.
Its actually hard these days to find JDM parts for cars as old as the Camry (at least for cars that weren't collector or sports cars). Conceivably, an engine importer or something could have their guys take a bumper off one of the cars they are cutting up... not sure how much it would cost or if any would do that for you though (and you would be waiting MONTHS for it to arrive).

If you can find someone from Australia to send you one over, that's your best bet now. I'm sure there aren't many 20yrs old cars parts left in japan after the recent earthquake. charlie will probbly be the only one in the usa to have that bumper now. It wasn't even off a camry it was of a vista which was the japan equal to the ES250.

Quantum mechanics - the dreams that stuff is made of.
My 90 LE has twin fan motors, I recently had the hood off as I was TS a cooling problem so I had the fans running. The volume of air these units pushed through was amazing. I work on large air handling systems, and the Camry is impressive. Stock I cant imagine having problems with air movement, a plugged cooling system would be another issue. Turbo motors might be another matter..
I would change the bumper for styling before I changed it for function.
