2nd Generation Replace fuel pulsation dampener

I've got a 1987 Camry, manual transmission, with 3SFE engine. The fuel pulsation dampener is leaking. I can get it loose, but can't remove it completely before it hits the intake manifold. How do I replace this unit? Does the intake manifold have to come off first? Standard repair manuals are no help.
Should the washers on the fuel line banjo connection be replaced? They look like crush washers. I bought a new dampener unit, but it didn't come with any washers.

You should be able to remove the whole fuel rail with the manifold, etc. in place. Then you can take the dampener off. The fuel pulsation dampener is on the fuel rail, right?

As for the washers - if they are solid copper washers, you can probably re-use them. They are technically single use washers, but if the mating surfaces are clean, they often work multiple times before leaking.

It is possible to remove the damper after taking its plastic cap off. The homemade open end 22 mm offset wrench can be used for best results

2nd Generation Replaced pulsation dampener

I was finally able to get the fuel pulsation dampener out by removing the plastic cap off the end. It was 110 F in the shade when I first tried to remove it and wasn't seeing too clear. The plastic cap was loose and slightly tilted, which was probably why it hit the intake manifold before being completely unscrewed. I was able to screw in a new OEM dampener with the cap in place with a little effort. It was a close fit. I used new crush washers since the outer washer had a deformation lip. Could only find the "special" washer on the dampener side of the banjo fitting from Toyota.
I considered using an aftermarket dampener for about half the cost, but observed that it did not have a fail vent hole on the end. This unit had a "lifetime guarantee", but not sure what happens when it does fail, how much fuel pressure variation occurs and what effect does this have on the engine performance?
Without the clear fuel leak failure indicator, how would a dampener failure be indicated. Too many unknowns , so decided to stick with OEM part.

The hole in the center is for the damper travel limiting screw; missing screw causes longer cranking time and failure to start from single attempt after hot soak (at least on my 79 Supra) unaware of that I waited until it leaked, then installed good used one (from 82 Cressida) and that fixed my slow starting problem. When this screw is tightened all way up it causes injector noise. On v-6 the screw tends to undo itself and usually found under cap
