2nd Generation 90Camry V6; Searched Forum - Need Help

Hi people,

I'm new to posting but have gotten some great knowledge from searching your posts, but now I'm desperate for some fresh ideas.

I bought a 90 Camry with 91,000 on it a few months ago and have been working out some issues with her. Now a new problem has developed and I'm not sure what to do.

When I turn the key to the on position(not start) I hear a hiss, almost like a large vaccuum leak coming from the area around the #4 injector. When I use the screwdriver stethoscope it almost sounds like a gas flow in the rail, and I can trace it from loudest (at injector site) to quietest (at fuel filter). Any thoughts would be welcome.

It is possible that the Circuit Opening Relay (really, fuel pump relay) is stuck on and you are hearing fuel flow. You can unplug the fuel pump (under the rear seat cushion, just pull the black clips at the front of the seat and lift) or unplug the relay (in the lowest center part of the dash, between the feet of the driver and passenger - it will be bolted to the ECU).

If the Circuit Opening Relay is the problem, you can get a replacement at a junkyard - it would be REALLY expensive at the dealer.

Otherwise, it might be a solenoid or something else in that area. There is really nothing that should be happening otherwise with the key in the ON position but without the engine running...

Thank you for your response. I really appreciate your input. I have yet to pull the relay yet, but it will be tried soon. Sadly, I attempted to change the fuel filter and the bottom fitting was so tight that I ended up having to cut it. Now until I get either a new length of tubing or find the correct fitting, I won't be trying anything. If it turns out to be what you suggest however, I'll be sure to post. Thanks again.

It's proper to use a flare wrench to ever try to take off a bolt from a type of line such as fuel line, brake line, or power steering line. You need a 14 mm. You can get them as a single from Sears in their tool aisle. Most places only carry SAE, not MM.

I did use the 14mm flare wrench, but I think that the fitting was so tight or threadlocked that I ended up rounding the head off - hence the cutting. Now I'm not sure where to get a new fitting, as from what I gather they aren't made and they aren't a standard piece either. So do you have any suggestions as to what fitting might work in its place, or should I try to have one custom fabricated? Thanks.

So it's safe to assume that you used a crescent wrench or even what I think is a 17mm open end wrench to hold the fuel filter in place so it didn't move and help round the bolt off. I'm really not too sure what the exact part number is that goes to the bottom of the fuel filter. I've been looking over the illustrations I found at toyotapartszone and I can't find it. I can find basically everything but that so far.

Also, and you may already know this, but keep in mind that you will be going clockwise when looking down at the bolt to remove it. I know when I did my first one before I was going the wrong way before I realized it.
