Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a simple fix?

Is it the little vent line running from the tank to the filler neck or the actual filler neck connection?

Ever since 10% ethanol became standard in my area, that little hose had to be replaced about 4 times. The 4th time I finally replaced it with some chemical resistant hose from Carquest. No problems since then!

I read that there was a recall on this so I figured a lot of you had the problem at some time. I noticed mines a few days ago.

I had this problem, I thought the tank might be rusted out somewhere. But it turned out to be the filler flange/pipe to gas tank gasket. I used RTV designed for gasoline applications and it's been fine ever since.

And yes as mentioned, the little return line loves to leak as well, I replaced that at the same time, had to go to a specialty supplier no auto parts store had a hose the correct diameter. Or you could just get the Toyota part.

Thanks for the link. There is no recall covering this particular issue. According to my investigation, one of the reasons for the failures of these hoses is the defective charcoal canister. The one way valve for fuel vapors is getting stuck closed, not allowing fuel vapors to get in. Therefore a very high pressure builds up in the gas tank and causes leaks at various places. The "smog" vapor leak test fails to pinpoint the canister as a poblem source, because it is not tested during this test. One of the possible solution to replace charcoal canister with one having the same pipe configuration and similar size from older models which appeared to be better made. (Perhaps from 82-85 corolla

Hmmm... I am currently finding this site very useful. I drove my 91 camry to work yesterday and when I was going to leave work, I noticed gas had leaked by the fuel filler. I opened the fuel cap and there was substantial pressure. I thought I might need a new fuel cap. Sounds like I should maybe check the charcoal canister *EDIT* or have someone qualified check it. Is the car safe to drive?

Ideally there should be no measurable (don't have numbers pressure required to build in the gas tank for fuel vapors to get into the canister; on my 79 Supra I never had building up tank pressure and gas odor/vent hose leak issue.
I am planning to experiment with used (or even new) canister from the junk yard off Toyota car with similar gas tank size (16 gallon) and same fitting configuration.
