1988 Camry Electric Windows

Hi Y'all,

Needing some help figuring out this issue I'm having with the front passenger side power window in my 1988 Camry Wagon. A couple of months ago, it stopped rolling down. I have tried a different(used) master switch assembly, a different passenger side switch, and have tested the motor. the motor works, and the 'up' position on the passenger switch still works, aka the window will still roll up, just not down. motor works in both directions; tested it by manually reversing polarity. I don't have a factory service manual for this car, so I'm not sure where to look for grounds, and which relay? is used to operate the power window system.

on my existing master switch assembly, the all unlock has never worked, but all lock works(both work on the passenger side lock switch). and neither up nor down work for the front passsenger window. plugging the second master switch assembly in, it had these exact same problems. so the problem could lie in the original master switch, and the one i bought just happend to have the exact same issues, but i was figuring the probability of this is low, so the problem is probably occuring somewhere else in the system. anyone have any tips, tricks, or good advice on where to look next?

thanks in advance for the help...

You probably have at least 2 broken wires in your driver's side door wiring. You will need to get in there and find them... (I had 1 fully broken wire and 2 almost broken wires on my Alltrac that I fixed recently)

You will need to remove the door panel and the kick panel in the footwell to access it. Pull the harness into (and through/out of) the door, pull back the rubber boot and see what you find. Carefully repair and test... Good luck!

Funny... I was just logging on to post almost the exact same question. I've had that problem with the passenger front window for a while, then the back driver side window went this spring, now the master switch won't work!

Will look at the wiring this weekend too!

There is no need to pull the complete harness out of the door - just pull the part of the harness out that goes from the door to the body of the car. The pictures/directions are otherwise quite good. I only cut myself in about 5 places on the sheet metal...

Well, about half of the wires through the door were broken or almost broken. First attempted to solder them... ouch! Not that competent with a soldering iron. Took some butt splices out of their plastic jackets and used heat shrink tubing to save some space. That worked and now so do all of my windows, seat belts, and door locks!

Well you nailed it Charlie! Had 2 broken wires inside the door jamb. also discovered that there was a previous splice from where a wire had broken before I owned the car. How they did it, instead of peeling back/removing the boot, was to just clip the wires on either end of the boot, snake a new short wire under the boot, then splice it on either end.

@mas91camry- glad this solved your problem too!
