Will egr valve from '83-'85 camry le fit on an 86 camry le?

Hi, I am shopping for an egr valve for my 86 camry le with a 2SE motor. I found one on ebay but its from an 83 to 85 camry le. The valve looks identical with only one vacuum lead on top and one vacuum lead on the bottom that goes to the egr vacuum modulator. Thanks.

I would think if it is from the same motor (2SE motor) than it should be identical. The 1st generation Camry was from the years 1983 - 1986. You could look up on an auto parts website like auto zone or advanced auto and see if the part numbers match for the years 83 - 86.

Could You not just clean off the carbon buildup on the egr valve you have now. I cleaned the one on my 1989 Camry 4 cyl. and made sure it opened and closed propery and it has been working fine. This was around 5 years ago.

EGR Cleaning

Today I removed and cleaned the EGR valve with throttle body cleaner and dust off. Took me less than ten minutes with a 12mm socket and crescent wrench. Huge improvement. I did order a new EGR vacuum modulator last week. That should fix things up nicely. Thanks for advice.

removing EGR Valve

Any tips to help in getting the EGR valve off???

I have an 87 Camry and the EGR is way in the back by firewall. The 2 12mm nuts are easy enough, but how does one get the one on the bottom off safely? I don't want to pay a mechanic 2.5 hours labor to do it as he quoted me, but on first attempt, it seemed like I needed a special wrench, or is there a "secret" way to reach it that I have figured out...

Any help will be appreciated...

I didn't have a wrench big enough so I just used a crescent wrench. The problem was the Throttle Position Sensor was in the way. So I positioned the wrench on an angle just left of the TPS which gave me just enough room to turn the nut barely a quarter turn. It took a while but I got it off by flipping the wrench and just doing quarter turns. Do the big nut at the bottom first then the two smaller nuts once you have the big nut off. Then wiggle the pipe and valve till the valve is free. Like I said it took me 10 minutes to remove, clean and replace the valve. There is no way it should take 2 and a half hours.

I noticed on my paperwork they were going to replace the Throttle Body Gasket... so is that an option? Removing the Throttle Body to get to the the EGR more easily? Just wondering...

is there special problems I may have if I do remove the Throttle Body? Don't need to be messing up something else.

Thanks in advance!

There is no mention in the haynes repair manual of having to remove the throttle body. The only gasket you might or might not need is the EGR Valve gasket. I have yet to replace mine. Look and see if you can get a wrench on the bottom nut and have enough room to turn it. Do a quarter turn then flip the wrench over and do another quarter turn, keep doing it like that until the nut can be turned by hand.

Thanks again...

I finally realized you were talking about the nut where the pipe goes back into the block, and not the one at the bottom of the EGR Valve! Anyhow, got it off, it was nasty dirty, half filled with caked gunk, so I cleaned it out really good, soaking it in Carb Cleaner and it runs much better now. Filled the car with some 91 Octane and am running it through, hoping it now passes SMOG. We did a pre-test right after I cleaned it, it was so very close to passing, but the NO was still a bit high at 25 mph.

We shall see...
