temp gauge shows hot when ignition is turned on

my 87 camry even with all wires disconnected shows red hot. I just did a motor and trans swap and am having alot of kinks such as car runs rich and idles weird.

Not too sure what you mean by with all wires disconnected but does it do that when you have the car on ? Maybe the wire got crushed and is going to ground now.

not sure about this car, but i know that on other cars i have tested the temp gauge by grounding the sending wire- this makes the temp gauge max out (if it is working properly). so it sounds like it is grounded somehow and that may be why it is reading as it is.

thanks for the help.

thanks that totally passed my mind my problem now is figuring out what wires im looking for.i had disconnected every wire that ran to the cooling system and it still pegged hot as soon as i turned on the key.

need help

Ok i checked the wires and cant find anywhere that its grounding out. My other problem is its running rich and ive replaced the plugs,plug wires, and the distributor cap. I am losing my mind on this car. I love this car and want to fix it. Any help would be truly appreciated.
