Is there a replacement part for overdrive button on gear stick?

87 Camry (auto trans)(4 cyl., 4 dr): Recently, the little "overdrive" button on my car's gear stick stopped working. Usually, when you push it it'll "click" down into the "overdrive" position. Now, when I push the button, it doesn't click into the down position. I have to drive with 1 hand on the stick, holding the button down continuously with my thumb until I reach a red light Is there a replacement button that I can buy online with the clicking mechanism attached? Also, I saw no screws to take the housing on the shift off. Is there a way to take off the housing and replace the button / clicking mechanism? I would be willing to do it if it is a "simple" job, but if it's something that needs to be done at a shop and cost a ridiculous amount of money, then I'd rather just drive around, holding the button down. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I got this from the Toyotapartseast.com site. I use to go to toyotapartszone.com and order but they no longer have the images anymore...not smart on their part as I just ordered parts for my 22RE truck and used the east site since they had the photos still.


Anyhow...from a 87 camry. I think you're looking at part No. 84722 on the image, but it looks like they have a new part no. assigned to that. $52.91

Replaced by: **722-12020-C0 **722-32020-03 1 1987.10-1988.07

On my 90' I believe it was just a screw that allowed me to lift up the shifter handle that gave me access to that O/D switch. And I thought I remembered that there was just a spring behind that overdrive switch.....maybe just the spring is broken. It's been a while since I messed around that area (for a different reason than yours) so I can't exactly recall.

I might still have my complete shifter mechanism (blue) that you can take any parts off of you want. Let me know if you are interested and around the SoCal area.

If not, you should be able to pull something like that at the junkyard for cheap.

Thanks for looking that very SPECIFIC info up for me! I'll go to the site and finish the research. Also, I'm going to see if I can find the screw on my car and take that shift assembly off. If I can do it myself and the switch looks easy enough to take off and replace, then I'll order the part and do the job. Thanks again for helping me out!

save yourself $52 and get a ziptie and tie it around the stick over that button. I alway left O/D in ON position. It just does not seem normal to drive in O/D OFF position.

EXCELLENT idea! I have a package of 100 zip ties and only used about 10 of them. You're right. A zip tie nice and tight around the button is a great idea. I tried using the black electrician's tape in the past, and on a hot day while I was at work, the car got hot inside and the tape simply slid down the stick.

also you can just cut the tip of the ziptie and jam it in the space between the button and stick.
