2nd Generation Good number of miles?

I have a 1990 Camry 2.0L i4 that has 156K miles. Just wanted to get everyone's opinions if that is a amount of miles for a 21 year old car and how many more miles do you think I could get out of this car?

That's only about 7,400 miles a year....I think the average american driver does between 10K and 15K? try google it and see.

I received my 90' camry (V6) with about 173K and a blown head gasket. I'm hoping to get 250K or more out of this engine.

I've got ~240k with the All-Trac and I think I can coax it up to 300k before it needs major work. We replaced the engine in our '91 at ~265k because my sister drove it for a while and didn't do any maintenance. The 3S is a damned good engine but will die if you don't change the oil for 20k miles.

The transmissions last forever. The '91 still shifts like it's brand new. Do regular servicing of the trans every ~40k-50k miles and it'll keep going and going. Take care of the engine and the same is true. Your car is only at about its midlife.

making the car to 300k miles sounds great to me!! Now I know that if I put a bunch of work into it, the car won't crap out after 10K miles

Heh, yeah, 156k miles is less than halfway through its life as long as you take care of it. I crashed my first Camry at 267k miles - and it was going strong (no oil burning, plenty of power, etc.), I parted out my second at around 320k miles (poor maintenance by previous owner, move the good motor to a new car) and my Alltrac has around 150k miles on it... though it doesn't have the stock motor.

If you do the work on it yourself, you can keep it going nearly forever...

"A good number of miles" depends on where you live. My folks had an '89 Camry and drove it ~100K in 12 years. By that point the body was pretty rusted out, wires in the doors were fatigued, it was probably on its 4th exhaust system, etc. They live in the midwest. We live on the west coast and are still driving a '91 Camry with 220K with no end in sight. The body and interior look great and except for a couple mufflers it still has its original exhaust.

yeah I drive in the midwest also. The Camry might not be my winter driver. Haven't thought that far yet! But thanks for the heads up Paul

And for exhaust... Stainless. Expensive as hell but damn it sounds good.

Also, the Glasspack from Cherrybomb is very rust resistant in my experiences with it thus far. And my Camry sounds pretty good for a 20-year-old naturally aspirated 4banger.
