All Trac Transmission Removal

Hey guys,

The vehicle in question is a 91 camry all-trac automatic

So I currently have the engine supported by the pass-side mount and I'm attempting to pull the transmission + transfer case out as a single unit.

I have everything unhooked from the tranny + transfer case including the prop shaft and I've separated the transmission from the engine ~ 4 inches (far enough to where the torque converter fluid is leaking out from the bottom.

However, the transfer case is getting caught up against the engine block. Is there any way to take the transfer case + transmission out as a single unit? Would separating the transfer case from the transmission allow for removal of the transmission?

I didn't want to drop the entire engine + trans as a single unit, but it seems like it may be easier to go this route. Currently I have the engine supported with a floor jack, and the transmission with a chain + engine hoist.

Thanks guys

I believe I have read it is easier to remove them as a single unit- Charlie (white90dx) would be able to answer your question much more accurately as he not too long ago pulled an auto All-Trac apart to do a 3S-GTE conversion.

The ONLY way to remove the Alltrac transmission from the engine is after the whole engine/trans assembly is out of the car.

You are required to pull the trans off the motor a bit, rotate it axially so the transfer case goes up, pull it farther off, then move the transfer case away from the block while finishing the separation. The firewall and steering rack get in the way of this operation in the car.

You can probably remove the transfer case and remove the rest of the transmission separately, but you will have to pull the motor to put a complete trans back together with it. You will want to drop the engine/trans assembly out of the bottom of the bay, then lift the car off of the assembly. It will not easily (if at all) go out the top.

Welcome to the world of the Alltrac.

Thanks Charlie, time for another week of downtime lol.

After some searching on this forum, the main things which should be disconnected from the engine before removal are:

1) Exhaust downpipe (Leave manifold on?)
2) A/C Compressor + Move out of way
3) PS Pump + Move out of way
4) Fuel lines
5) Radiator

Does this sound about right? I've already removed the exhaust downpipe, A/C Compressor, and rad. After looking up at the PS pump, it would seem as if the intake manifold would hit it when removing the engine from below.

Also, is the ECU located above or below the glovebox?

Anything else to look out for on an Automatic car? Or when it's time to throw the transmission back on for that matter?

Thanks for the support guys, trying to get this car back on the road asap.

The ECU is located behind/below the radio, between the driver and passenger footwells. You can see it if you pull back the carpet and look above the center tunnel. You should remove the glove box and lower dash panel, disconnect the ECU and pull the harness (carefully) through to the engine bay.

Otherwise, it seems like you have most things taken care of. Go slowly and watch carefully as you are removing the engine. There is room to slightly move and rotate the engine as you are dropping it to clear everything. You will need a strong chain to lift the front of the car after the engine is on the ground... good luck!
