1985 Camry just quit running.

My sons 85 Camry was running fine. It just quit going down the road. It turns over fine and has compression, a tired but intact timing belt, but no spark at all. I check out the distributor and trying to remove the ignitor, broke a part of it where the screws go in to hold it. I went to a wrecking yard and got a distributor they say is good. It seems tighter than the one I have, but still no spark.
ECM? And is there any way to check the ECM out? I jumped the wires at the control box to see if the fuel pump is working, but by myself, I failed to hear it running. Again, ECM? The car has 230,000 mile on it and has been running good. Thanks for any help.

Another quick way to check for a fuel dleivery problem is to remove the tube leading to the throttle body and spary some carb cleaner in there. Now reinstall the tube and try to start the car. If you now at least get the car to sputter, where you got nothing previously, you have identified a fuel delivery problem.

Over here with all the rain we get the epoxy on the ignition coil cracks and gets moisture inside and shorts out. Try look at the epoxy on you coil for any cracks. Happens over here a lot. Also I had a wire go bad at the connector going to the distributor and it killed the spark. Just some thought. I would guess that its not the ECM though.

Lyle.
Sorry, I missed that.

^I Have to agree with the above poster. The most likely cause of a no spark condition is a hairline crack in the coil.

Pulled the top timing cover off. The belt is not pretty, but its intacked and working. If I get it running, its getting changed. I have voltage at the distributor as needed, but its not sparking at the plugs. I bought a used distributor as I thought the ignitor might be bad. I read in the manual where you can jump a wire accross 2 points on a plug at the left wheel area under the hood and the fuel pump should run. I am not hearing this pump, but will get back by the tank to make sure. This leads me to believe if the pump is not working, and no spark, this is all controlled by the ECM and it may be bad.???
