2nd Generation Hard upshift 1st to 2nd. change trans fluid?

I have a 1989 LE wagon with the 2.0 and AT.. 122k... It was shifting hard from 1st to 2nd. I checked the fluid and it was way, way overfull. ( I just purchased the car from a local Toyota dealer. A one owner trade in. ) I previously owned a 89 LE back in the early 90's. I love my 2nd Gen Camrys. They are great cars. Anyway, as part of routine upkeep I had the trans fluid and filter changed at around 100 k on my first LE... About 10k later... The trans went out. Ever since, I always recommend not to mess with your trans fluid if its working fine. Well, I read a tread on here that says the hard upshift can indeed be caused by overfilling. But, I didnt want to end up with a bad trans down the road....So, I took what I consider the most un-evasive approach... I drained the old fluid.. and simply added new to the right level... I didnt take down the filter and flush the thing all out. The car shifts beautifully now as it was designed to do... Its like a new car...More will be revealed on down the road as to how the trans fairs having had this done. I cant see how it will hurt it though. Not the way I did it. I'll let you know if I run into trouble on down the road..

itainthem,

I'm having some grinding issues in my 1990 manual trans. I replaced the fluid once and it didn't help. I haven't heard anything about the amount of fluid that should be in the thing until now -- I simply added the fluid until it started pouring back out of the fill spout.

What is the 'recommended' fill level and would it apply to my 1990 4-cylinder?

The user manual tells you to fill it up till you can feel the fluidlevel through the fillerhole.

I dont remember on top of my head but is says like 1-2 cm under the hole is the correct level.

Dont think the manual trans is so picky though, if you filled more that is.
