2nd Generation 89 Camry Hard Start / Sputtering while driving and sitting / slow acceleration

Hi all, I have an 89 Camry 4 cylinder with 60K miles on it. I've had the car in my possession for a few months. Prior to that, it was sitting in a garage and was driven very rarely. It had probably not been driven at all for about a year before I got it. Since April, I've put just under 6K miles on it.

For the past few months it's had the somewhat annoying but not all that troublesome problem of taking several cranks for a cold start. In the past two weeks however, this problem got significantly worse and the drivability of the vehicle started to deteriorate as well. The engine will sputter and hiccup and shake badly (very inconsistent running level), and while idling sometimes seems like it's about to cut out, but it doesn't. Acceleration is quite bad and overall performance is down significantly.

I took it to a local mechanic, and at first they said there was nothing wrong with it, but upon my insistence that they take a closer look they told me I needed to replace the fuel pump. I have done that, however, the problem still persists. While we were replacing the fuel pump we noticed that there was a fuel-line-like tube off the back of the gas tank that was disconnected that the mechanice hadn't noticed. I had the fuel filter replaced in April along with the Head Gasket and spark plugs. Oil levels are good, and I've had the oil changed regularly.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Can I ask why the head gasket on such a low mileage engine was replaced?

I'm also very surprised about the head gasket - are you sure it wasn't some other gasket? (valve cover, maybe?)

As for the problems - you need to change out the rest of the ignition system. Spark plug wires/cap, rotor and ignition coil. Use OEM parts if possible. Also make sure the spark plugs are standard NGK or Denso copper plugs - the $2-$3 ones really do work best, as long as they are NGK or Denso.

2nd Generation

The gasket was blown and oil was leaking. We also had a new exhaust system installed at the same time as the head gasket. Other than those issues, the mechanic said that the car was in perfect condition.
