2nd Generation Vehicle Speed Sensor location on A140E

Hello Everyone,

Here is the situation - a couple of weeks ago my speedometer failed and the O/D light in my dash started flashing.I checked for codes and I got 42, after some research I found that it meant my vehicle speed sensor is not working .

Can someone help me locate the position of the VSS on a A140E transmission? and perhaps a quick guide on the best way to get it out and possible tools needed.

Many thanks in advance for the help.

Rajan.

Broken speedo cable. It pokes through the firewall behind the gauge cluster somewhere (I only know the LHD cars in specifics) and goes to the top of the differential (approximately below the throttle body). There will be a screw-on fitting at each end that you should be able to undo by hand to replace.

Thank you 71Corrolla and white90dx . Sorry I was not able to reply sooner - I'm trying to work on the car inbetween my classes.

I think I have found the VSS, is this it? For some reason I was thinking that the vechicle speed sensor would have had a electrical signal wire coming out of it .

Please click on the pic to see a larger image.

Im a bit confused on what I need to replace... do I need to replace the speedometer cable or the VSS?

If I had to replace the speedo how do I take out the instrument cluster?. I will try getting a pic of this.

The green stuff on the transmission is coolant.I took this pic while I was replacing my heater hose that had bust

Many thanks in advance,
Rajan.

That is the base of the speedometer cable. It is not the Vehicle Speed Sensor. The gen2 Camry has a mechanical speedometer which then creates the electrical signal for the ECU. If the speedo itself isn't working, you have a mechanical problem.

Start by removing the cable and seeing if you can find a broken part in the cable (spin one end, check the other). You can also pull out the speedo drive gear (held in by a 10mm bolt, I believe) to see if the teeth are fine on that. Another option is the cable that goes through the firewall - you would have to remove the gauge cluster to see if that is still working. Just go through the mechanical parts of the system to find the problem.
