What is the green wire and "main" fuse in Gen 2 Camry electrical?

I recently developed a short somewhere in my 1990 Camry's electrical system that caused the alternator to heat up and smoke when it was parked and turned off in a body shop.

I'm trying to figure out what the green wire goes that comes off the "main" battery fuse. (see photo below)

Oddly even with the alternator disconnected, and the alternator fuse pulled, I still have a short somewhere.... indicated by voltmeter testing.

It appears to be via the "main" fuse ... green wire.... Can't seem to determine where the green wire goes.... It doesn't appear to be the starter or alternator, I don't think.

Looking for info or a diagram of where the green wire goes.

I'm attaching a photo that shows the battery and the major fuse terminal next to it. It has three fuses in it. main, alt, and something labeled AM2 (the last one seems to be fine).

Thanks in advance for anything you can tell me. (The photo below is not my engine

got it

I just kept plowing ahead...pulled every fuse individually... then one by one cumulatively until they were all pulled.

pulled the steering wheel and drivers dash and tested the wiring harness on the steering wheel and ignition.

in the end, I concluded that it was just the alternator and went with it.

Will just need to keep an eye on it and hope that was it.... hope it doesn't suddenly decide to do it again and burn up. ha!

So far, so good.

Thanks anyway.

When you say you had a short what points are you metering (probing) and what is the display on the meter saying? What brand/model meter are you using, digital or analog? Didn't you blow a fuse somewhere?

not a one

That's what's so weird and a bit scary. Not a single fuse blew.

I was using a little tester with a light, and put it between the negative cable and the negative pole on the battery.

it would light up for the slightest flow of electricity... like the door light. but nothing showed a short or leak.

so, it seemed to come down to only the alternator. it was very strange. it got hot enough to get the alternator smoking, literally, and hot. But no fuse blew.
