1991 Camry V-6, Timing Belt

Guys,
I am replacing the transmission on my Camry and while I have the engine out, I wanted to go ahead and replace the timing belt since the car has about 170,000 miles on it. I have never done this before and would like any helpful information that I will need to know to make the job easier during the process. Any advice will do. Any do's and don'ts that I need to be aware of. Looking forward to your input. Thanks!

The job will be really easy with the engine out (the harmonic balancer removal might be an issue). Some points off the top of my head:
  • If the new belt does not have timing marks on it, line up the cam and crank and mark the old belt, then transfer the marks to the new belt. This will make installation fool proof.
  • The Aisin water pump comes with an aluminum gasket with sealant already part of it, you don't need to use any additional RTV. Just make sure the block surface is clean.
  • Replace the thermostat, Toyota original or Kuzeh (equivalent) only. Don't forget to replace the O-ring on the inlet pipe that connects to the lower rad hose.
  • When installing the belt, I line everything up, then put the upper idler pulley on last (then install the hydraulic tensioner).
  • You don't need to replace the hydraulic tensioner normally, although some kits come with it.
  • Use thread sealer on the tensioner pulley bolt.
  • If you are replacing the cam seals, they can easily be removed by taking off the bearing cap. If you do remove the cap, make sure you use a small amount of sealant on the outer edges of the cap, specifically towards the camshaft side. There are also two grooves on the surface of the head where the bearing cap meets, clean that out, it is there to allow excess sealant to be pushed out so it has somewhere to go.

BTW, the right hand bank camshaft marks don't line up exactly, I made a thread about this wondering about it. I took apart an engine at the wreckers last week and the marks were basically the same, still seems strange to me that they don't match perfectly.

That's all I can think of right now, good luck and I'm sure others will give you some helpful tips.

Replace Crankshaft seal on both ends, oil pump seal, especially oil pump rubber spaghetti/batwing o-ring seal, and transmission seal. You have a chance to also replace the oil pump if the shaft has a wear grove in it. Also not a bad idea to replace water pump too and distributor shaft seal and o-ring. I would replace the timing belt tensioner.
