re: 89' V6 washer fluid system...

Aloha Folks-

This has been an ongoing project and I hope someone can point me in the right direction:

When I activate the push button to spray some washer fluid on the windshield it comes out but not with much power as the liquid just reaches the windshield. I took off the spray heads and blew them out so I know that fluid is getting through. I can also hear something come on when I push the button in.

Is there a pump for our washer fluid systems? Relay, switch? Again, I have the Haynes manual and it does not go into great detail. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes, should be a small pump incorporated into the washer fluid container. Mine is molded and push fit.
No relay but may have a fuse. I would disconnect the supply line from the spray heads (carefully, the connections break very easily) and disconnect the supply line from the pump and blow the line out with some air pressure if possible.

Cheap windshield washer fluid and dirt can gum things up at the strainer, the pump and in the line(s). I removed the fluid container from the fender well cleaned it out and pulled the pump off. The plastic filter screen there was pretty plugged up with goo.

Blow out the nozzles one more time, re-assemble everything, add some clean fluid and it should work like new.

Best of luck!

re: washer fluid pump..

Aloha Dave-
Thanks so much for your reply and the advice. So, I bet the best and only way to get at the container is to take off the plastic wheel well protector then there are screws that hold it to the frame? And you said even though the small pump is push fit into the container, it sounds like it should be able to come off so I can service it, correct?

Maybe I will get out the floor jacks out and take off the wheel on the passenger side before taking out the plastic wheel well protector. This way I will have more space to work with.

Thanks again.

Correct. The pump fits into a rubber grommet on the container.

Unplug the wiring and hose to the pump and pull the pump out. Whatever is inside the container will drain out though.

"Whatever is inside the container will drain out though."

How true ... however, it was the hose from the jointly attached radiator supply reservoir that poured water on me ...

My pump was not working so I just blew through it then briefly connected the leads to the battery and it started right up, put it all back together with cleaned screen. It was clogged with jelly-like goop from the bottom of the container.
