So, In my 88 Camry all trac I have the 3s-fe. But to find a spare that is not in a create is next to impossible. What other engines Fit to that 5 speed trans with out major mod. Or is there a V6 I can use with little mod?
And I am sure some of you wonder why I am thinking about this.....
My current 3sfe after a new head gasket set, valve system gone threw throttle body, and other said sensors...... I still get this Rev'ing when at full Temp. it is a 650 rpm jump and drop.the Cam's are in good shape. the distributor needs to be replaced, But thinking it is not the main problem.
I also wonder about the so called computer in it. if I get a very rough idel ( cant spell this am. sorry.) I can hit the econ or ac switch and get it to smooth out about 400 rpm higher.
If someone wants I should be able to get a video out there for you to hear/see what I mean.
Surging idle sounds more like an ecu/sensor problem than a problem with the engine itself.
You said the throttle body and "other said sensors" were replaced. Was the TPS replaced? If so, was it replaced with a new unit? I replaced the throttle position sensor in my All-Trac to quiet down a surging idle but I used a junkyard tps... Only to have it fail a month and a half later and bump my idle up to a minimum of 1400.
It could be the ecu failed, but that doesn't seem very likely to me.
I did not replace the TPS. I'll have to try that. one a second note. what is the air valve called on the left side of the intake? it has the plastic screw in the bottom for adjustment. that is plugged and unable to pass air threw. and there are no part stores that can figure it out around here. and the salvage yards dont have anything that old in a toyota. But I am tring to find another engine so I can either rebuild it for a spare or beef up the car a bit. which others will fit with out heavy mod or what v6 to the trans for the all trac?
If you can't get the stock (easy to work on) motor running right, why do you think you can get a motor swap running right?
There are many things that can cause a surging idle and rough running. Make sure your throttle body and idle air controller are clean and working. Test your TPS to make sure it is sending out the correct signal. Make sure your AFM (top of air box - the Air Flow Meter) moves freely.
Does the motor run well at higher speeds / loads?

It runs great under any load. it is at idle that I have the surge. But as I mentioned. I wonder as well about my wiring harness and the computer since I can turn on the econ or ac and get about 1100 rpm to 1500. but it still has a dead miss on a cyl. not sure what happened there. hence the reason I actually went threw the head and the valves and seals and had the cams checked. so this is a huge head scratcher for me. Logic dictates that I should replace the TPS Ignition Mod and the Distributor ( crack found ) due to the Coil. I have no clue, But where I bought the car from had went threw 3 junk yard distributors, then a total engine. He proclaimed due to over heating.... But anyway. But the other engine is for the love of being a mechanic, and wanting to ensure I have one. I have alot of kids and it's my wife's car. sorry started rambling again. Oh, and I will search to see if I can find it. But is there a good place to get the complete wiring and vac diagrams?
another question. I think I know the answer but not sure. If I order a rebuild kit.... and go .20 or .40 on the pistons, Do I have to re-program the ecu?
My advice.. I would read what White90DX suggests, process it through carefully and begin with recommendations.
As for the “love of getting greasy”, it’s the most fun when you actually making progress
Yea, it shall be fun. with what is in there. Just to find the project/spare engine. belive it or not. My wife ( no you did not read that wrong ) wants to try it on the local track.
Is there a referance builder's section in the forums here?
And I know this is not the ford area, But has anyone ever dealt with a blown 4.6l romeo ford engine b4?
The idle is *supposed* to go up when the A/C is turned on (this happens with both A/C and Econ). It sounds like the idle up valve for the A/C is adjusted a bit wrong, but that's not your problem right now. (that's the the plastic screw thing you talked about in your first post - it is only active when the A/C compressor is engaged)
If you have a cracked coil, replace it! There are pretty detailed procedures to track down your problems in the factory service manual. Surging idle can be caused by a few things, already mentioned in this thread. Get to testing and let us know what you find.
Oh, and if the motor is strong under load, don't rebuild it! That's like amputating your arm for a cut on your finger.

PS. The ECU is fine - stop worrying about it.
