91 Toyota Camry won't rev over 2500rpm

Hello all - - I have a 91 Camry with the 2.0l engine. The car had a no start issue - - mechanic could not "figure it out" . This morning I installed a new distributor and it started right up ! The so-called mechanic never even tried this - - he poked and probed and eventually gave up.

So... after I put the new distributor in this morning the car started right up - - man was I happy ! My bubble was burst quickly when I discovered that the engine now won't rev over 2500rpm !

Before the no start issue the car had been giving me trouble - - sometime is would just bog down but then it would always rev back up. When it failed for the last time and becase an actual no start issue it had bogged down, died and just would not start. That is when I towed it no to the mechanic who "diagnosed" it for over a month and gave up. I towed the car home and installed the new distributor this morning and the car started right up !

But now the car just won't rev over 2500rpm. Another important note - - before the failure that caused the no start condition I had a check engine light on for - - - jeez months.... from what I recall it was a Mass Air Flow code - - can't remember exactly what it was. Becase I did not have the cash for the replacement part I just ran the car - - and like I said it really was not an issue - - the car only recently started to bog down and then.... die.

The funny thing is that the issue I have now - - not being able to rev over 2500rpm feels just like how the car would feel when it temporarily bogged down before the final failure that caused the no start condition.

So here is am new distributor in and the car starts right up - - but it won't rev above 2500rpm. I have no check engine light but I must note that previously if I cleared the check engine light it would come back on after about 3-4 days of driving. Obviously since the car has been off the road with the battery disconnected for well over two months the code is cleared. Since I can't even drive the car now I know the check engine light will not come on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks all

Kerry

The air flow meter could be defective. Did you set your ignition timing correctly?

I do not have a timing light but I placed the new distributor in the exact same position (by eye).
Is there a way to check the AFM ?
Another note - - when I have the top of the air cleaner off and rev the engine I hear what sounds like a motorcycle engine sound coming from the intake tube going to the air intake - - is this normal ? Someone mentioned it could be a stuck EGR valvle? Would that cause a no rev condition ? If yes do you know of a way to check the EGR valve for proper operation?

thanks

Kerry

You need to make sure that your valve timing is correct (timing belt had not jumped a tooth0 the n borrow a timing light and check the ignition timing; also check the connector on AFM
