Gen1 Toyota Nation Friends

Guys.
I wanted to get on today and say THANK YOU VERY MUCH to the folks at Toyota Nation. As some of you are aware I have been working on a 1991 Camry LE V6 for about 6 weeks. I had to change out a transmission which included a motor pull, change the transmission, and from advice on here I also changed the water pump, thermostat, cam seals, timing belt, front and rear crank seals, valve cover gaskets, transmission gasket, transmission filter, distributar cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs, pcv valve, timing belt tensioner, cv axles (both sides), brake calipers, brake pads, etc, I will say I am not a mechanic, I had alot of questions along the way which were answered by a great group of guys. I want to say, this is a great site with great people and I am very proud to be a part of Toyota Nation!

I had alot of questions along the way and folks on this site answered the questions in a quick timely manner. The car was drivin to work today by my son today and it is running better than it has in a long long time!! So thanks goes out to Sturdavj, 71 Corolla, White90dx, Doctor J, atobe, 88 All-Trac, nitronate33, socal88camry and Grego92.

I also need to thank my good friend Andy. He has been a great help during this process.

Thanks to you all, if there is anything I can ever do for you please do not hesitate to ask!! Thanks again.

Your very welcome!
What I would like to ask is beyond the capabilities of this forum
It is a silly question, but have you made sure your differential is full? This check is often forgotten after transmission replacement.

Transmission Replacement

I have filled the tranmission through the dip stick. Is there fluid that I should be adding somewhere else? Like I said, I am not a mechanic so I thought the differential was filled through the dipstick, if that is not correct please let me know. Thanks!

I used to own a 1989 Camry 4 cyl. and the differential had a seprate fill plug and a seperate drain plug. I am sure your 91 camry is the same setup as my 89 even though it has the 6 cyl. engine. They are both second generation camrys. You might want to check on that asap!

Transmission Differential

Ok, Now I am confused. I have called a local service repair shop and he is telling me that the he shows it is filled with Dextron 2 through the dip stick. This I have done already. Doctor J has posted that I may need to fill the differential. I am confused , does this take gear oil, or does the dextron 2 tranny fluid do the trick, where should I look for a different fill location? Please help, I would hate to trash this transmission due to my ignorance. Any help greatly appreciated, thanks!

You need to find a 17 mm "bolt head' type fill plug on the back side of the transmission which is faces the firewall of the car. (See the picture, red box) If your tranny does not have it (later models) then no separate fill is required

The differential takes dexron automatic transmission fluid and not 80-90 gear oil. In the past it was dexron 2. They stoped making that and switched to dexron 3. When You buy transmission fluid make sure it says dexron 3 compatible on the bottle.

Starting around 1998 the Toyota Camrys transmission and differential are filled through the automatic transmission dipstick tube; however they have 2 seperate drain plugs.

Do what Dr. J said and look for the differential fill plug. When You find it make sure You can remove it before draining the differential fluid cause if You drain the fluid and can"t remove the fill plug Your screwed.

When I replaced the differential fluid on my 89 Camry I ran a hose down through the engine compartment and into the differential fill hole. On the other end of the hose I attached a funnel and then added tranny fluid till it started dripping out of the differential fill hole. At that point I removed the hose and replaced the fill plug. Thats it.

It's good news to hear the differential had some auto tranny fluid in it. Not sure how long it would of lasted if it was bone dry.

How did You add the fluid to the differential? Did You use the hose and funnel method or some other way?

What we did was put the transmission fluid in a pump type oil can. We took the lower side support off of the car and removed the fill bolt and pumped the tranny fluid in until it was full. It sounds as though we made it harder than it had to be, but it accomplished the task. Thanks everyone for helping here. It would have been sad to trash the tranny we just spent all this time changing out. Thanks again to a great group of guys.
