adjusting the timing question

You know I never adjusted the timing on my v6 after putting it back together!? and I'm noticing a slight hesitation when first accelerating. I don't have timing light, but think I can borrow one. Do I need to hook up a tachometer or can I use the one on the dash? Am i reading something from the tachometer while adjusting? or am I just making sure it is idling at around 700 before I start using the light and adjusting the distributor?

I've never done this before, as you can see

AFAIK you can't adjust the idle speed on these engines, except for adjusting the throttle stop screw which won't do much, so don't worry about the idle it will be close enough. The tach in the dash is accurate enough as well.

I used plug #1 for my inductive pickup, which is on the rear bank right side of the car, a bit hard to get to. Make sure you connect the jumper as shown here:

The idle speed screw is sealed with plug on this car.
Warm up the engine until the fan turns on and off (the car is at normal operating temperature) and check the timing as desribed above.

Thanks guys....I'm gonna do this tomorrow.

I have to repaint my crossover pipe also....Boooo. I had used VHT silver on the first time, then decided to use the lesser engine 500 degree gold color on top of that, well the gold is now peeling off. I read somewhere online not to do that or it will peel off .
