Talking Strange Front end noise

Hey all.

It's been a while since I've been on. I did major work on my front end. Resealed the rack, replaced control arm bushings, rack ends, tie rod ends, outer cv joints, stab bar bushings & ball joints.

Car has been aligned & has been running great. The wheel bearings though I guess feels jealous that everyone else got replaced except it, cuz after the cv joints were changed it's louder than I ever heard it. In fact, I never used to hear it b4. Sounds like being inside a commercial plane.

Any who, that's not the issue. I've been hearing a sound that's sort of similar to the clacking of a worn cv joint while driving in a straight line, it is not as pronounced, nor does it clack in rapid succession with increased vehicle speed as with a cv joint noise. It's spaced far more apart between clacks and are just a few.

It doesn't make the sound while I make locks & pwer the car nor while i turn so I doubt it's the cv joint. It's coming from the wheel on the transmission side.

The sound isn't continuous. It happens once the car is in motion. It doesn't sound off when I hit potholes. Could this be the wheel bearing? I know they make coursing noises while the vehicle is in motion, but do they make that type of noise as well?

Thanks in advance

RE:Strange Front end noise

If a wheel bearing is extremely worn, it very well could make te noise you've described. If a sealed ball bearing loses seal, then loses lubrication, it will wear the balls in the bearing down until there is too large of a gap between them, and the "pop" would be one of the balls in the bearing jumping from one side of the gap to the other. however some sealed bearings come equiped with a little retainer around each ball to prevent this, depending on the quality/brand of the bearing. But as far as your question goes, yes. It is possible for a wheel bearing to produce this noise.
Good luck

Thanks gtsrichard. God's willing i'm gonna change it this weekend. I found the wheel bearing at an affordable price. I have been viewing the diagrams on toyodiy.com and i see that there is actually an axle oil seal kit that is sold different from the axle bearing.

Are they normally sold as a kit?

I did same work to mine, inc axle(s) R&R and struts. I picked up a noise.

I went back in and re-tighten componeants, found the top nuts on my struts were lose. After tighting up, noise went away.

Let us know what find with bearings

After going thru the manual I notice there is a special tool required to seperate the hub from the steering knuckle & also to remove the inner race.

My first question is... I don't have that tool. Any recommendation on what could be used as substitute?

& secondly, I didn't get this new bearing with a inner & outer race, does that mean I'll be reusing the ones currently on the car?

I use a shop press to remove the spindle as well as the bearings... However, I have to get the outer race and the inner race on the spindle pressed off by a shop, as I do not have the proper tools to press them myself. You have the complete bearing- the bearings themselves are the balls contained in the metal cylinder you have pictured.

Thanks 88 All-Trac. I took another look @ the bearing & saw that the races are there.

My pops has a hydraulic press @ his shop. He also has this combination puller set with other stuff. Should this should be ok to get the race off the hub? See pic below.

In some situations, when a press is not available, a nut and a large bolt with two “thick” washers/plate. One the size of the inner race and the second one large enough to span the hub. This set up can also be used to remove bushings. Washers can sanded to size

It is always best/safer to use press when available

Thanks for that tip Sturdavj. I replaced it this morning. Started out bright and early. There's a machine shop walking distance from my house. I disassembled the wheel assembly and took the hub & knuckle there and got the hub and old bearing pressed out and new one pressed in (& the new seals replaced).

The machinist informed me that water damage was the cause of my bearing failure. Apparently the seal went bad allowing water inside. My hands were all mucky so I didn't wanna handle my bb during to take much pics. There was alot of rust inside though.

I walked back home and reassembled everything and took it for a test drive. No longer does it sound like being inside of a commercial plane from within the car, & no more of that clacking noise.

My wife help me with just a few pics.

Thanks to everyone for the tips and guidance!
